Maria Immacolata Vassallo de Lopes and Clarice Greco, Brazilian researchers from the Phantom on Film network, presented the paper ‘Adaptation, inspiration and fans: Forms of “transcreating” a story inside the fandom of The Phantom of the Opera’ at the conference of the International Association for Media and Communication Research (IAMCR 2017), that took place in Cartagena, Colombia, 14-20 July 2017.

The paper brought a theoretical overview on the concept of adaptation, using the idea of ‘transcreation’ first introduced by Brazilian semiotician Haroldo de Campos. This concept refers to the creative process involved in translation, which must necessarily include an effort of re-creation, even while trying to keep faith with the ‘spirit of the work’. Transcreation is a useful framework for considering the cultural transfer involved in adaptations of The Phantom of the Opera across the world—not only by professional writers but also by fans.
