Members of the network participated in a panel session at the international conference entitled “When the Music Takes Over: Musical Numbers in Film and Television” at the University of Salzburg, March 8-10, 2018. The conference, which consisted of dozens of papers by scholars from around the world, focused on recent research discussing the musical number, the musical moment, or the ‘crystal’ or ‘rich’ song. Network members formed a panel entitled ‘“My Don Juan Burns, Christine’: Unmasking Music in Screen Adaptations of The Phantom of the Opera’. Themes presented in this panel included the focus on gender and sexuality, genre hybridity and popular theater in Mexican interpretations, the use of video essays as a research tool, and the position of the composer in Phantom films from 1974–2014. This panel was chaired by Derek Scott, Professor of Critical Musicology at the University of Leeds, who is a member of the advisory group of the network.
