Miniseries/TV film, with the singer Raissa Bignardi
Director – Alfredo Laferriere
The 1952 television miniseries El fantasma de la ópera was almost certainly the first screen adaptation made of the Leroux text in Argentina. Adapted by the radio, film and television entrepreneur and producer Miguel de Calasanz and directed by Alfredo Laferriere, all sources confirm that the soprano Raissa Bignardi played the ingénue Christine in the series (see image). Luis Alberto Negro is also sometimes mentioned in the credits provided for the miniseries. What’s sure is that television historian Jorge Nielsen has documented that during the early 1950s the fledgling Argentine television industry opted for variety show formats and themes which attracted the wider public, including ghoulish figures of universal literature. The miniseries was transmitted live on the only television station running during the decade, the state-operated Canal 7.
