A graduate of the University of São Paulo, Brazil (BA in Social Sciences, Master’s and PhD in Communication), Immacolata did post-doctoral research at the University of Florence in Italy. Her work has focused on the theory of communication and on research methodologies of communication studies, in particular on reception, the telenovela and transmedia.
She co-ordinates the Centre for Telenovela Studies (CETVN), as well as the Centre for Communication Studies (CECOM) at the University of São Paulo (USP). Further afield, she is founder and co-ordinator of the international research network OBITEL (Ibero-American TV Fiction Observatory) and the subsidiary national research network OBITEL-BRASIL. She is also President of IBERCOM, the Ibero-American Communication Association (2015-2018) and Director of MATRIZes, the Journal for the postgraduate Communication Studies programme at USP.
